Overrating the Spartans

Good God, Justin... just because it's your site doesn't mean that you can play with the big boys.  It's great that you're a Spartan homer and all (someone has to root for them), but when you make comments like

Overlooking Michigan State in March is had been a bad idea for 10 years now... good job !

I mean, seriously?  You really believe that?

So, not only has MSU been “overlooked” just twice in the past ten years (2003 & 2005), but they’ve been “overrated” just as often (2004 & 2006) in just the past five years!  I don't mean to take anything away from a team that's won two NCAA championships, appeared in six Final Fours, was ranked all year, and still plays on the very same court where they last won it all, but they weren't even the league runner-up.

And if it's such a "bad idea", is that why your bracket will be busted after tonight, seeing as you picked Memphis over Michigan State?

The People's Comments:

cdeezy:

In 2001-02, the 10th-seeded Spartans lost in the first round to the 7th-seeded NC State Wolfpack, which then lost in second round to the 2nd-seeded Connecticut Huskies.

In 2003-04, the 7th-seeded Spartans lost in the first round to the 10th-seeded Nevada Wolfpack, which then defeated 2nd-seeded Gonzaga (what?) before losing to 3rd-seeded Georgia Tech.

In 2005-06, the 6th-seeded Spartans lost in the first round to the 11th-seeded George Mason Patriots, who were playing without their leading scorer, who was serving a one-game suspension. As the legend goes, the Patriots went on to defeat 3rd-seeded North Carolina, 7th-seeded Wichita State, and 1st-seeded Connecticut before losing in the national semifinals to eventual champion Florida.

In 2006-07, the 9th-seeded Spartans lost in the second round to the 1st-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels, who then defeated the 5th-seeded USC Trojans before losing to the 2nd-seeded Georgetown Hoyas.

So, to answer your question -- just once, when a miracle occurred. Nice try, though.

Full disclosure: only 19 of the 65 teams that qualify each year for the NCAA tournament will lose to a Final Four team during the tournament.

crashnet:
I'm too lazy, could you to a check to see how often they lost to a final four team when knocked out early?

coldcat:
Justin, 50-20 Memphis at the half. Just thought I'd bring that up.
